Nervous System

The nervous system is the bodies communication system.  Nerve impulses travel to and from the brain along nerve fibers called neurons.  There are two parts to the nervous system: the central nervous system that consists of the brain and spinal cord and the peripheral nervous system which is basically everything else.  The peripheral nervous system is divided into the somatic and autonomic systems.  The somatic nervous system aids with voluntary movements such as when you move your arm to scratch your head.  The autonomic nervous system is involuntary or that which we don’t have control over.  The autonomic system is divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic.  The sympathetic nervous system controls the fight or flight response.  The parasympathetic nervous system brings the body back to rest and relaxation.

The nervous system is made up of neurons or nerve cells.  Each nerve cell has a cell body that houses the nucleus and produces protein.  The dendrites of a neuron receive information from the body and send it to the nucleus.  And, the axon takes the information and sends it to the organs and tissues.  Some axons are covered in fatty sheathes called myelin that speed up the transmission of the impulse.
